About BSides312
BSides312 is a nonprofit one-day conference run by longtime members of Chicago's hacking and infosec community. In fact, many of them founded the original BSides Chicago! It's built as a collaborative venue: whether you hack hardware, excel at logistics, or just bring curious friends, you help shape the conversation.
Like every BSides event, the conference follows a community-driven model built by and for hackers. Its purpose is to widen the conversation beyond the usual boundaries, offering space for people to both present and take part in an intimate, collaborative setting. The result is an intense mix of discussions, demos, and interaction where new ideas take shape.
If you and your organization are as passionate about the security community as we are and would like to sponsor our event, please reach out questions [@] bsides312.org. To show our thanks, sponsors will be welcome to chat about themselves and their organization, fostering connections with the BSides312 community.

Lodging
Chicago is not known for being dense with large hotels, and the ones that are here certainly are not cheap. AirBNB may be your best bet.
We are nearby the CTA Blue Line train, which we very highly recommend the use of. This means you can stay anywhere within walking distance of the line and have a good experiences getting to and from the con area, 24 hours a day. The line goes all the way out to the suburbs, so you will likely find cheaper lodging out there (Try the Rosemont area).
If you're driving, the world is your oyster.

Learn to Hack for $Thousands in Training Prizes
The BSides312 CTF MUDs ("Multi User Dungeons") are text-based hackable playgrounds for you to explore, with. These are inspired by a massive genre from a bygone era when users connected to a game server over telnet to play, back when dialup modems ruled supreme and bandwidth was scarce.
Modern MMOs have their roots in MUDs like these.
If you're not a keyboard jockey, we've also got Chicago's famous TOOOL folks here to teach you lockpicking!
THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF PRIZES provided by Just Hacking Training!!

DerbyCon MUD Legacy CTF!
The first MUD (BSides312 MUD) has existed in many forms for various conferences, it was originally known as DerbyCon's DerbyMUD, then DEF CON's "Safe Mode MUD" and now it lives on as BSides312 MUD. As with most CTFs, this version is hackable, and cheating is encouraged! Can you get to the top of the leaderboard by exploiting the many vulnerabilities in the game?

DEF CON MUX Beta CTF!
For the second MUD, help beta test the DEF CON 33 MUX Contest and get a leg up on the competition!! "Battletech MUX" is a form of MUD based around in-game player interaction. It is Battletech-based, and attempts real-time giant robot "mech" combat in a classic MUX-format, one 15-minute hacking battle at a time.

When the Night Has Come:
Finding Belonging in a World That Doesn't Understand Us

About Steve
Steve Shelton helps people and organizations align achievement with purpose and meaning. He founded Green Shoe Consulting to research, educate, consult, and coach individuals and organizations on stress and burnout, as well as teaching skills and strategies to alleviate and reduce the negative consequences of these challenges. He combines decades of experience as a cybersecurity salesperson with industry giants like Symantec, RSA, and Proofpoint, with evidence based, applied psychology frameworks to help performers in various high stress environments perform their best.
Keynote Synopsis
In a world where cybersecurity professionals are constantly on guard—protecting systems, data, and people—it's easy to feel isolated, misunderstood, and burnt out. But what if the real key to resilience wasn't just technical skill… but human connection?
This keynote is a soulful, entertaining, and emotionally resonant journey into the power of community, especially among the neurodivergent minds who make up so much of the hacker and infosec world. Blending storytelling, humor, science, and music inspired by Ben E. King's "Stand By Me," we'll explore what it means to truly belong—and how standing by each other can be the ultimate act of resistance in a high-pressure digital world.
You'll leave this talk reminded that you're not alone. You have a tribe. And we stand by each other.

But why make a "BSides312?""
To fill a gap. BSides312 embodies the essence of the Security BSides ethos, rooted in a desire to empower individuals who often go unheard in the dynamic realm of cybersecurity events.
Just as the original BSides (now "BSides Las Vegas") emerged from the overflow of talent at DEF CON, our Chicago-based initiative arose from an overflow of desire from THOTCON attendees to squeeze out one more day of content. In fact, some of the founders of BSides312 were even founders of the original BSides Chicago, but over the years various new handlers have opted to move the dates to later in the year. Ever since, a public demand for it to return existed, and we could no longer ignore the cry.
We understand the passion and drive of countless individuals eager to share their insights, yet constrained by limited opportunities. It's important to note that our mission is not to compete or detract from other local initiatives, rather, we aim to complement and expand the landscape of opportunities available to the Chicago cybersecurity community. By creating a welcoming platform, we aim to uplift and amplify voices that might otherwise remain unheard, fostering a culture of generosity and reciprocity within the vibrant cybersecurity community that has enriched us all. See below for the continuation of this story!

Two BSides in the same city? Is that allowed?
Yes. In fact, Security BSides International approved Delhi and Los Angeles to have two Security BSides conferences, and now Chicago!
-
Is there a dress code?
This is NOT a boring executive conference, and we want enable you to be yourself. Dress as you normally would in a public setting with strangers, with your "swimsuit bits" covered.
If you really love wearing a suit, please go for it. If you love being goth, queer, furry...whatever it is, please bring "you," so long as it doesn't distract from the content being provided!
-
What skill level is required to attend?
BSides312 welcomes everyone from complete beginners to seasoned professionals. We've designed our talks and activities to cover various skill levels, and our CTF competition has challenges for both newcomers and experienced hackers. If you're new to security, don't worry! The community is friendly and our volunteers can help direct you to beginner-appropriate content.
