About BSides312

BSides312 is a nonprofit one-day conference run by longtime members of Chicago's hacking and infosec community. It's built as a collaborative venue: whether you hack hardware, excel at logistics, or just bring curious friends, you help shape the conversation.

Like every BSides event, the conference follows a community-driven model built by and for hackers. Its purpose is to widen the conversation beyond the usual boundaries, offering space for people to both present and take part in an intimate, collaborative setting. The result is an intense mix of discussions, demos, and interaction where new ideas take shape.

If you and your organization are as passionate about the security community as we are and would like to sponsor our event, please reach out questions [@] bsides312.org. To show our thanks, sponsors will be welcome to chat about themselves and their organization, fostering connections with the BSides312 community.

Capture The Flag event for the day. All levels welcome to play. Prizes for 1st thru 3rd place.

Lock sport brought to us by TOOOL Chicago!

CTF

Capture The Flag Hacking Competition

The CheeseLand Capture the Flag (CTF) Event is an exciting event inspired by the oldest of online multiplayer RPGs (MUDs, or Multi-User-Dungeons). It aims to provide a competitive learning environment for information security and general computing skills. Designed by the famous EvilMog, you may recall versions of it from the old DerbyCon days and elsewhere.

We have crafted a range of tasks suitable for all skill levels. Regardless of your experience, with effort and dedication, you should be able to tackle all challenges. However, some may require significant time and perseverance. To this end, we embrace two approaches: play to learn (not play to win), and the famous Try Harder methodology.

Keynote Speaker - Steve Shelton

When the Night Has Come:
Finding Belonging in a World That Doesn't Understand Us

Steve Shelton

About Steve

Steve Shelton helps people and organizations align achievement with purpose and meaning. He founded Green Shoe Consulting to research, educate, consult, and coach individuals and organizations on stress and burnout, as well as teaching skills and strategies to alleviate and reduce the negative consequences of these challenges. He combines decades of experience as a cybersecurity salesperson with industry giants like Symantec, RSA, and Proofpoint, with evidence based, applied psychology frameworks to help performers in various high stress environments perform their best.

Keynote Synopsis

In a world where cybersecurity professionals are constantly on guard—protecting systems, data, and people—it's easy to feel isolated, misunderstood, and burnt out. But what if the real key to resilience wasn't just technical skill… but human connection?

This keynote is a soulful, entertaining, and emotionally resonant journey into the power of community, especially among the neurodivergent minds who make up so much of the hacker and infosec world. Blending storytelling, humor, science, and music inspired by Ben E. King's "Stand By Me," we'll explore what it means to truly belong—and how standing by each other can be the ultimate act of resistance in a high-pressure digital world.

You'll leave this talk reminded that you're not alone. You have a tribe. And we stand by each other.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Bsides312 embodies the essence of the Security BSides ethos, rooted in a desire to empower individuals who often go unheard in the dynamic realm of cybersecurity events. Just as the original BSides emerged from the overflow of talent at DEF CON, our Chicago-based initiative arose from a recognition of the untapped potential within our own community. We understand the passion and drive of countless individuals eager to share their insights, yet constrained by limited opportunities. It's important to note that our mission is not to compete or detract from other local initiatives, rather, we aim to complement and expand the landscape of opportunities available to the Chicago cybersecurity community. By creating a welcoming platform, we aim to uplift and amplify voices that might otherwise remain unheard, fostering a culture of generosity and reciprocity within the vibrant cybersecurity community that has enriched us all.

  • Yes. In fact, Security BSides International approved Delhi and Los Angeles also have two Security BSides, as well as Chicago! Of course, the requirement is that each event coordinates with one another to space out events 5-6 months apart, don't poach sponsors or do anything that prevents the two events to coexist.

  • We need you to have clothes on most of your body, including shoes. Other than that, we don't really care what you are wearing as long as it doesn't potentially cause an injury to someone else.

  • BSides312 is a community-focused event with accessible pricing. Tickets are $25 for students and $50 for general admission (not including fees), which covers entry to all talks, villages, and activities. Check our ticket link above for current availability and options.

  • BSides312 welcomes everyone from complete beginners to seasoned professionals. We've designed our talks and activities to cover various skill levels, and our CTF competition has challenges for both newcomers and experienced hackers. If you're new to security, don't worry! The community is friendly and our volunteers can help direct you to beginner-appropriate content.

  • Yes, the Irish American Heritage Center has a free parking lot on-site. Public transportation options are also available: the Montrose Blue Line station is approximately a 15-minute walk away, and several CTA bus routes serve the area. Ride-sharing is another convenient option.

  • We encourage sharing your BSides312 experience, but always ask for permission before photographing individuals. Speakers may indicate if they don't want their presentations recorded or photographed.

  • The Irish American Heritage Center is wheelchair accessible with elevators serving all floors where conference activities take place. We'll have accessible seating in all presentation rooms. If you have specific accessibility needs, please contact us at [email protected] before the event so we can ensure you have the best possible experience.

  • Absolutely! Our Call for Presentations (CFP) for the next event typically opens about 4-5 months before the conference. Follow us on social media or join our mailing list to be notified when submissions open. We encourage talks from speakers of all experience levels, including first-time presenters. If you're interested in speaking but unsure about the process, feel free to reach out to us for mentorship.
